F and A Exception Database
It is the policy of George Mason to charge the maximum allowable federally negotiated F&A (Indirect) cost rate on all sponsored projects regardless of funding source unless a sponsor's written policy will not allow full recovery of F&A costs. This may often apply to a not-for-profit organization. For-profit organizations are charged full F&A costs. George Mason accepts sponsor F&A exceptions without any special approval process as long as the rates are published and applied consistently to all university grant recipients. Therefore, F&A rates of organizations should be considered to be pre-approved by George Mason whenever there is an explicit published policy limiting the amount that they will allow for F&A costs. The F&A exception database contains a list of sponsors with a published policy limiting F&A to a rate lower than the university's federally negotiated rate. If the sponsor appears on the list the reduced F&A can be used without a formal exception request. As additional sponsors are identified that meet the criteria described above they will be added to the database. Please send any questions to proposal@gmu.edu. |
